He studied drums with Tony Chirco, Joe Cusatis and Elvin Jones, and spent over 10 years studying jazz interpretation with Lou Stein. John has recorded with a variety of acclaimed musicians – from folk legend Pete Seeger to jazz great Bucky Pizzarelli. His experience is rich and varied. He spent 12 years as the staff percussionist for the Darien Dinner Theatre playing over 65 musicals. He’s traveled across the US playing with pianist Michael Carney, he recorded 13 Karaoke albums for the label “Pocket Songs” and has been featured on many commercial recordings. John’s credits include playing or recording with artists such as Bucky Pizzarelli, Jerry Bruno, David Finck, Bill Watrous, and the Manhattan Wildlife Refuge, Danny Stiles, Will Lee, Joe Beck, Carmen Leggio, Chris Brubeck, Lou Stein, Clark Terry, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Pete Levin, Frank Foster, Elliott Randall, Marvin Stamm, Howard Johnson, George Duvivier, Al Klink, Ben Aronov, Duke Jordan, Chip Jackson, and many more, including Broadway and Television actress Barbara McNair. John brings some of New York’s greatest studio musicians to play with him at a summer jazz series he’s had in Norwalk, CT for the last 25 years. Some of the regulars have included Tom “Bones” Malone, “Blue” Lou Marini, John Bailey, Bill Bickford, Jerry Bruno, Bill Crow, Bucky Pizzarelli, Carmen Leggio, Eddie Bert, and Gerry Niewood. John’s most recent recording entitled “Over the Rainbow – A Tribute to my Dad”, features Hiroshi Yamazaki and the great bassist David Finck. John credits his ability to play in such varied settings to his belief that your music education is never complete – it is a lifelong process. As such, he has developed a proven teaching method that stresses interpretation, time, reading, and technique. He’s incredibly proud of the many students he’s had who have gone on to successful careers in different aspects of the music business. John currently lives in CT and continues to teach privately in his home.
