The Drummer’s Guide to Designing Your First Custom Drumsticks

Designing your first custom pair takes about three minutes, but knowing why you're choosing each option makes the result dramatically better. This is the walkthrough we'd give you over the counter.

Step 1: Start from what you know

Don't design from zero. Whatever's in your stick bag right now — 5A, 5B, 7A — is years of accumulated preference, even if it was originally an accident. Open the [custom builder](/custom-drumsticks), pick the stock size closest to your current pair, and treat it as your baseline. Custom works best as an edit, not a blank page.

Step 2: Fix your one complaint

Every drummer has one sentence about their sticks that starts with "I just wish…". That sentence is your first customisation:

• "…they were a bit faster" → lengthen the taper
• "…they hit harder without going up a full size" → shorten the taper, or add 0.3–0.5mm of diameter
• "…my hands didn't cramp" → go up in diameter; a fatter stick lets you grip looser
• "…my ride sounded cleaner" → smaller, rounder tip
• "…they lasted longer" → hickory, medium-short taper (and grain selection, which is our job)

Change that one thing. Leave everything else at your baseline.

Step 3: Choose your wood

Hickory is the default for a reason — tough, shock-absorbing, predictable. If you break sticks or play loud, start here. Maple is around 10% lighter for the same dimensions: a big stick that plays quick, beautiful for low-volume gigs and drummers who want size without weight. Step 4: Pick the tip

Round for articulation, barrel for punch, teardrop for versatility, acorn for warmth. If you're unsure, teardrop — it's the tip that does everything well and nothing badly.

Step 5: Make it yours

Add your name or logo down the shaft. Beyond looking the business, printed sticks stop disappearing at rehearsal rooms and festivals — worth it for that alone.

Step 6: Order one pair, then judge

Resist ordering five pairs of an untested spec. Play one pair for two weeks, across your loudest and quietest gigs. If it's right, your spec is saved with us and every future pair will be identical — that's the whole point. If it's nearly right, change one more variable and go again. Most drummers land their forever spec by pair two.
