Introducing Butt 2 Butt: the drumstick with no tip
We've added a new shape to the Custom Builder, and it isn't really a tip at all. Butt 2 Butt is a stick turned with the same rounded butt at both ends — no taper into a bead, no shoulder, just a straight, full-diameter shaft from hand to head.
Why would anyone want a stick with no tip?
Because sometimes the tip is the problem. A conventional bead gives you definition and articulation, but it also puts the smallest possible contact patch on the drum. Turn the stick around and you get the opposite: maximum mass and maximum surface area at the striking end.
- Volume and weight. With no taper the stick carries more wood forward, so each stroke lands heavier without you working harder.
- Dark, wide tones. On cymbals the broad end produces a washy, low-pitched spread rather than a ping. On toms and snare it's a fat, rounded crack.
- Two sticks in one. When one end wears, flip it. You get roughly double the life out of each pair.
- Rim shots and cross-sticks. The uniform shaft means every rim shot sounds the same whichever way round you're holding it.
Who it suits
Butt 2 Butt is a specialist shape, and we'd be honest about that. It's for players who already play butt-end for parts of a set and want a stick designed for it rather than one pressed into service. Think heavy rock and metal, marching and drum-corps style tenor work, hard-hitting pop touring where consistency across a long set matters, and anyone who finds themselves reaching for the fat end on the floor tom every night.
If you need a clean ride pattern or quiet, articulate jazz comping, this isn't the one — pick an Acorn or Tear Drop instead.
How it's built
Because both ends are identical the stick is naturally EQ balanced — centre-weighted, straight off the lathe. The builder locks balance to EQ for this shape; Front Loaded and Fast Back simply don't apply to a symmetrical stick. Everything else is open: Hickory or Maple, any of our finishes, any grip, your name or logo on the shaft.
Try it
Open the Custom Builder, pick Butt 2 Butt under Tip Shape and the spec sheet will update with the new profile. Minimum order is 12 pairs, hand-turned and weight-matched in London like everything else we make.
