Your Sticks, Tailor‑Made: Choosing the Right Size, Taper & Profile

Most drummers choose their sticks the way they chose their first pair: whatever the shop had, whatever their teacher played, whatever survived the longest. Then they spend years adapting their hands to that stick. Custom turns that around — the stick adapts to you. Here's what each variable actually does.

Diameter: the feel in your hand

Diameter is the first thing your hand notices and the last thing you should compromise on.

• Thinner (7A territory, ~13.5mm) — fast, light, brilliant for jazz, low-volume gigs and intricate cymbal work
• Middle (5A, ~14.4mm) — the reference point most drummers know; balanced for everything
• Thicker (5B/2B, ~15–16mm) — more mass, more volume, less effort per accent; the honest choice for rock, metal and heavy-hitting worship gigs

If your hands cramp, go up a size, not down — gripping a too-thin stick tightly is the classic cause. Our custom builder moves in fractions of a millimetre, so "between a 5A and 5B" is a real spec here, not a wish.

Length: reach and leverage

Standard sticks run around 16"–16.5". A longer stick gives you reach around a big kit and more rim-shot leverage; a shorter stick tucks your motion in and speeds up close playing. Small changes matter — 6mm of length is immediately noticeable in the rebound point.

Taper: where the stick comes alive

The taper — how and where the shaft narrows toward the tip — is the personality of the stick.

• Long taper — front-light, springy, fast rebound; the stick does more of the work at low volume
• Short taper — front-heavy, durable, drives more energy into the drum; slower to rebound but hits harder
• Medium taper — the all-rounder, and where we suggest starting if you've never thought about taper before

If you love your current stick's diameter but wish it felt "quicker" or "meatier", taper — not size — is almost always the answer.

Tip: the sound of the stick

The tip is the only part that touches your cymbals, so it defines your top-end sound.

• Round/ball — bright, focused, articulate; every ride pattern speaks clearly
• Barrel — broad contact, fat and punchy; great for rock backbeats
• Teardrop — the versatile middle ground; angle of attack changes the tone
• Acorn — full, warm, rich cymbal wash
