John Powney: session drummer for hire in United Kingdom
John Powney is a full-time professional drummer based in Kendal, Cumbria, available for live gigs and studio sessions across the United Kingdom. With over three decades of playing experience, he has shared stages and studios with the likes of Warner E Hodges, Seven Seals, De Piratas, Eric Ambel, Sarah Borges, 68-75, Webb Wilder, Nick Latham, and Bowie Beak and Powney — a roster that spans both sides of the Atlantic and speaks for itself.
Services offered
- Live hire — available for gigs, dep work, and touring
- Studio sessions — tracking drums for recordings across a wide range of genres
Genres and style
John's playing crosses a genuinely impressive range of styles, making him one of the more versatile drummers available for hire in the UK:
- Country, Roots, and Blues
- Pop, Indie, and Alternative
- Funk and Disco
- Drum & Bass and Techno
Whether you need a pocket-steady groove for a roots record or something harder and more electronic in feel, John has the musicality and experience to deliver. His current kit setup tells its own story: Natal Cafe Racer shells (12", 14", 20"), a Primas Custom Shop 13x6 snare, Paiste 2002 cymbals, a DW pedal, and a Morgan Davies seat — a rig chosen by a drummer who takes tone and feel seriously.
Based in United Kingdom
John is based in Kendal, Cumbria, well within reach of Lancaster, Preston, Manchester, and the wider North West of England. He also covers Scotland via the M6 corridor, and is accessible to Yorkshire and the North East. As a full-time gigging and touring drummer, travel is part of the job — don't hesitate to get in touch if you're further afield.
About John
John started playing drums at the age of 8 and turned professional at 18. He has spent his career building a reputation as a reliable, musical, full-time gigging, session, and touring drummer, working with quality musicians from both the UK and the USA.
Away from the stage and studio, John is also an endurance drummer — he has played for 60 continuous hours to raise money for mental health and domestic abuse causes. It's the kind of commitment that tells you a lot about who he is as a person, not just as a player.
He is a proud member of the London Drumstick Co. endorsed artist family, playing LDC's hand-turned custom maple 5B barrel tip sticks.
