Choosing Cymbals in the UK

The cymbal market can feel overwhelming, with dozens of sizes, weights and finishes all promising something different. The good news is that narrowing your choice becomes straightforward once you understand a few core principles.

Crashes, Rides & Hi-Hats – Know What You Need

Most drummers start by thinking about the three workhorses: crashes, rides and hi-hats. Crashes deliver a fast attack and quick decay, making them ideal for accents and fills. Rides offer a controlled, clear ping with a fuller body for keeping time. Hi-hats are arguably the most expressive cymbals you'll own – the way you open and close them shapes the entire feel of your playing. It's worth spending time with each type before committing, because the interaction between stick tip and cymbal surface is deeply personal.

Weight & Finish Matter More Than You Think

A thinner cymbal responds easily to lighter playing and blends well in acoustic settings, while a heavier cymbal cuts through loud stages and high-gain amplifiers. Finish – whether brilliant, natural or raw – affects brightness and sustain. Neither is objectively better; it comes down to the music you play and the rooms you play in.

Matching Cymbals to Your Sticks

The sticks you play with have a direct effect on how a cymbal sounds and how long it lasts. A heavier stick hits with more force, which can be brilliant for projection but harder on thinner bronze. At London Drumstick Co. our hand-turned, weight-matched hickory and maple sticks are made to feel consistent from stick to stick, so you can dial in your touch with confidence and get reliable results every time you sit down to play.

Questions answered

A sensible starter setup usually includes a pair of hi-hats, one crash and a ride – these three cover the vast majority of musical situations. As your playing develops you can add additional crashes or specialty cymbals to taste.
